Rita A Horne, age 88 of Oconomowoc, passed away peacefully at AngelsGrace Hospice Care July 6, 2024. Rita was born November 30, 1935 to Cornelius and Margaret (Bodden) Gundrum on the family farm outside Allenton, WI. Rita was baptized and confirmed in her faith which was a central part of her life. She graduated West Bend High School then attended Marquette University earning her degree in Teaching. She taught school in Milwaukee for 3 years. Rita met the late Elton Horne at a dance at Marty Zivko’s in Hartford. They married April 22, 1961, and raised their five children in Hartland, WI. The greatest gift of her life was being a Mother and Grandmother.
Once Rita’s children were old enough, she started teaching again and was the First grade teacher at St Charles Catholic Grade School for 29 years.
Rita loved to travel. She visited all 50 states. Her favorite trip was to Australia and New Zealand, followed by Rome, The Vatican and the Holy Land.
Rita was a member of Mothers of Twin’s Club, AAUW(American Association of University Woman), Red Hatter’s, Movie Club, Book Club, Knitting in the park. Rita loved playing cards especially Sheepshead and Bridge and Uno with the Grandchildren.
Rita is survived by her children - Jim (Katie), Anne (Dave), Andy (Amber), Carl (Renee), Steve (Lisa) and grandchildren, Adam, Amy, Josh, Matt, Nikki and Hope.
She is further survived by her two sisters Teresa and Millie(Jim) along with many nieces and nephews.
Rita’s family would like to thank the staff at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital along with the staff at Angel’s Grace Hospice Center for the wonderful care they gave her.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024, at St. Charles Catholic Church (313 Circle Drive) Hartland, WI, with Father Ken Omernick officiating. Family and friends are welcome to visit directly at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. The burial will be in the parish cemetery.
