Richard E. Hincha

Feb 16, 1954 — Jun 22, 2026

Richard Hincha, age 72, of Orange, Virginia, passed away on June 22, 2026. He was the son of Emil and Mary (nee Barnharst) Hincha and was born on February 16, 1954, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was previously married to Carol Engelmohre.

Richard graduated from high school in 1972 and went on to obtain his undergraduate degree from UW-Milwaukee. He continued on to NY University and UW-Madison, where he obtained two master’s degrees and ultimately his PhD in film history. He worked as a professor teaching film history at UW-Milwaukee and had a brief stint in security at the Milwaukee Public Museum before reaching his dream job as a film specialist at the Library of Congress in Dayton, Ohio.

Richard moved from Dayton to Culpeper, Virginia, with the Library of Congress in 2006. Here he continued to live his life’s passion, working alongside an amazing bunch of friends and co-workers preserving film for future generations.

Richard took up running in his 40s, and after conquering many Rock N Roll marathons domestically, he branched out doing marathons in Europe. Here he discovered his love for travel and learning about history and culture in many other countries. He raced and traveled all over Europe, including Portugal, Spain, Istanbul, Moscow, Jerusalem, Germany, Egypt, Italy, France, the UK, and many other countries for the last 20-plus years. Paris was his favorite city, having visited it for the 30th time with his sister, Lois, in April this year. Here, he participated in his last marathon at the age of 72. Richard absolutely loved meeting new people, trying tasty new foods, and learning about the history and people of other countries firsthand.

Throughout his life, Richard’s Catholic faith was a bedrock of his being and he practiced what he believed. As he traveled the world and lived his day-to-day life, he always sought to include and lift up others. Let his memory be a blessing.

Richard is survived by his sister Lois (nee Hincha) Richards and her family, as well as friends and relatives.
