Michael J. Mooney

December 15, 1951 — February 4, 2026

Michael James Mooney, 74, passed away on February 4, 2026.

Michael was born in Aurora, Colorado on December 15, 1951, to Quentin and Catherine (nee Lynch) Mooney. They spent most of his childhood in Naperville, Illinois. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Business from Marquette, a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Carroll College, as well as a CPA designation, he spent many years working as an accountant. After he transitioned to working as a substitute teacher, he always enjoyed the friendly greetings from his former students when running into them later in the community.

Michael met Judy after a rugby injury brought him into her physical therapy offices. The two married in 1980 and spent 45 years together sharing in many adventures. They enjoyed traveling together, which included cross-country skiing in Switzerland, seeing the sights in Iceland, and taking many trips hiking and backpacking out West. They also ran in many 10K races around the Milwaukee area.

Michael “Mooner” had many interests, both quiet and adventure-filled. He completed over 200 parachute jumps, went rock climbing in the Tetons, and participated in a rugby club for several years. Michael loved storytelling and was always good for a laugh or a crazy story. He also loved to read, especially about history. He had a library filled with books and could cite specific books and passages that pertained to topics that came up in conversation. Another passion of his was biking. He enjoyed going for leisurely rides around Hartland, as well as seeking out the hilliest routes to ride in Southwest Wisconsin, which included the Horribly Hilly Hundreds bike ride. Being a devoted father, he loved spending time with his kids. He coached their soccer and basketball teams for many years and enjoyed vacations with them, including multiple trips to Beaver Island, which was one of his favorite places to go.

Michael is survived by his wife, Judy; his children Quentin (Robyn) Mooney and Kelsey (Mike) Sinense; his grandchildren Lucy and Weston Mooney; Zoe, Isaiah, Harmony and Joshua Sinense; and his great-grandchildren Angelo, Ace and Valencia Sinense. He is further survived by his brother, Jack (Sue) Mooney; his nieces Mary, Kathy and Anne Mooney; his nephews John (Aliucha), Michael (Natasha) and Tim (Giusi) Mooney; as well as great nieces, great nephews and many dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Quentin and Catherine Mooney, his aunt Virginia and Uncle Tom Calt, grandparents and other relatives.
