Audrey Effie Mcneil

September 16, 1925 — December 9, 2020

Audrey Effie McNeil of Hartland, formerly of Delafield and Whitewater WI, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, December 9, 2020. She was born on September 16, 1925 in Milwaukee WI, the daughter of Agnes and John McPhee Smith.

In 1941 she was swept off her feet by a tall, lanky, blue-eyed blonde in a maroon sweater who strolled into her Latin class at South Division High School. On their first date, Bob only had enough money for the street car ride out to the South Division football game and they had to make the several mile trip home on foot. No matter, Bob and Audrey fell madly in love and were married for 56 years until Bob’s death in 2002. Audrey always maintained that every girl should have a Bob in her life.

An only child, Audrey was bound and determined to have eight children of her own, and she did! She was a patient, tolerant mother who supported her children to the max. She was a great storyteller, an accomplished pianist, loved to golf and shop, and stole away for frequent trips with Bob as a release (and relief!) from managing her lively crew. In addition to her eight children, Audrey was a proud and loving Grammy to 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Audrey is survived by four daughters: Donna (Robert Komes) of Fort Atkinson, Ruth (Mark P.) McHorney of EauClaire, Patricia (David) Weiss of Hubertus, and Peggy (Howard) Marklein of Spring Green; three sons: Daniel (Nancy) of Delafield, Douglas of Hartland, and John of Hartland; and two brothers-in-law: Donald McNeil of Hartland and James McNeil of Santa Barbara, CA. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert J.

Audrey enjoyed life and was very happy with and proud of the way she was able to live hers. She welcomed new adventures and especially loved a party or celebration.

A celebration of her life will be held this Spring once we can all gather and party safely. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to AngelsGrace Hospice of Oconomowoc, WI whose staff members were so helpful in fulfilling Audrey’s number one wish of remaining in her home.
